Mountain roads

The UAE has a mountain side that surprises many visitors. In Ras Al Khaimah, the Jebel Jais road climbs 36 kilometres in tight bends to a viewing platform near the top; the 1,934-metre summit itself lies on the Omani side. A 2,832-metre zip line opened here in 2018, with speeds of up to 150 km/h. The air at the top is far cooler than on the coast and can drop below freezing in winter. In Al Ain, the winding road up Jebel Hafeet offers one of the best-known inland views, over the city and the desert at sunset. These roads are for calm driving: slow down in the bends, stop only in the marked parking areas to take photos, and never pull over on the shoulder. Carry water and a warm layer, and check the weather before you go up, as fog and wind can change visibility quickly near the top. Fill the tank before you start the climb.
