Experience

The east coast

On the east coast the mountains meet the sea. The brown Hajar Mountains drop to the Gulf of Oman, the sun rises over the water, and the beaches are quieter than those in the west. Around Fujairah visitors come to swim, dive, fish and take boat trips, and to stay on a sandy shore between mountain and sea. In the mountains behind the coast lies Wadi Wurayah, a protected area since 2009 and a Ramsar wetland since 2010, with a waterfall and more than a hundred species of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. Combine a morning on the beach with Al Bidya Mosque and Fujairah Fort in the afternoon. If you swim or dive, follow the local operator's instructions and watch for currents. The road from Dubai to the east coast crosses the mountains and is part of the trip, so do not rush it. Book your stay early for winter holidays, when residents head to the coast too, and pack sun protection even in winter.
