The creek and its abras

Old Dubai lives on the water. Dubai Creek is an arm of the sea that runs about 14 kilometres into the city, and it was the city's only harbour into the twentieth century, receiving dhows from India and East Africa and supporting the pearling trade. Today wooden abras still carry people between Deira and Bur Dubai on a short ride across the water, the best way to see the old city from wave level. Start in the Al Fahidi district, with its narrow lanes and wind-tower houses, then visit Al Fahidi Fort, home to the Dubai Museum since 1971. Next, cross the creek by abra to Deira and walk the wharves where dhows are loaded with cargo. Early morning and evening beat midday, and the light on the water at sunset is worth the wait. Carry a little cash for the abra and small shops, allow at least half a day to walk without hurrying, and watch your step getting on and off the boat.
