Villas on stilts over the water

The most famous Maldives image—a wooden walkway and a villa over shallow water—belongs to the resort-island model, not the capital. In Ari, North Malé, and elsewhere, rooms stand on stilts above the lagoon, so the view from the bed is reef, not street. That style has been part of the tourism offer since resorts expanded after 1972, and it differs sharply from a Maafushi guesthouse room on sand inside an inhabited island. Choose it for isolation and quiet above the water—and remember that price and standard are not the World Bank economy index, but a separate lodging category. Walking the deck at the islands teaches lagoon depth before you swim. You do not need five villa islands; one island over three days is clearer than rushed hops that steal half a day each jump. Photos from Thudufushi, Meeru, or Medhufushi tell the same idea: stilts, wood, turquoise.
