Beyond the resort island

Local islands and guesthouses

Until regulatory changes around 2009, many visitor stays were largely confined to separate resort islands. After that, guesthouses spread on inhabited islands where Maldivians live, and Maafushi is a near-capital example in the southern atoll. Here you walk an island street and choose a restaurant or public beach within local rules, rather than remaining inside a resort perimeter. This shift diversified what is on offer without ending resorts. If you want a clearer cost and more daily contact, start on a nearby local island; if you want isolation above reefs, stay with the one-island resort model. Other atolls such as Vaavu show similarly quiet shores in photos taken from the sand edge. Plan snorkelling and meals as small local services, and ask about boat times to Malé before assuming an all-day marine transit network.
