The street is water

The dhoni and crossing the lagoon

Between islands there is no road linking the atolls. The boat is the street. The traditional dhoni—a wooden Maldivian craft with an open deck—still appears in fishing and short hops, while speedboats and seaplanes serve resorts farther from Malé. This movement has been at the heart of the experience since the 1970s: you arrive at the airport on Hulhulé, then choose a boat or seaplane by island. Crossing the lagoon at sunset or morning explains why the trip is measured in marine minutes, not metro stops. Book timings with your stay; schedules are not an all-day open urban network. On local islands you may find smaller boats for a nearby beach; at resorts access is often managed centrally. An hour on a dhoni or speedboat deck between low islands is closer to understanding the archipelago than a full day in a room without a horizon.
