Reefs and the turquoise lagoon

The country’s shape itself is a lesson in reefs: a ring atoll, a shallow lagoon, then a drop to the ocean. Maldives geography reminds you that dry land is low coral, and that visitors see the contrast between turquoise inside the barrier and deep blue beyond it from the plane before they touch the water. Snorkelling from an island edge or a nearby boat is enough for many trips without deep diving; clarity depends on season and current, and the dry season is relatively clearer per monsoon descriptions. In Baa the reefs are managed inside a biosphere reserve; in Ari, islands recur inside wide lagoons. Do not promise a specific creature on a given day; promise the form: sand, reef, channel, ocean. An hour on a walkway above water at low islands teaches scale better than a list of names. If you go out with a local boat, ask about sea conditions—not about a “secret best spot” without a source.
