Lombok

East of Bali, across the Lombok Strait, lies an island that matches its neighbor in beauty and differs in pace. Lombok covers about 4,566 square kilometers; its north is dominated by Mount Rinjani, Indonesia’s second-highest volcano at 3,726 meters. Inside its wide crater sits a blue lake called Segara Anak, and the whole area is a national park recognized in UNESCO’s Global Geoparks Network since 2018. Climbing Rinjani is a two- or three-day trek for dedicated walkers. Off the northwest coast lie the three Gili Islands—Trawangan, Meno, and Air—where no motor vehicles run; you get around on foot, by bicycle, or by horse cart. In the south, around Kuta Lombok, broad white-sand beaches draw surfers. Lombok suits travelers who want Bali’s landscapes with fewer crowds. Its capital, Mataram, is the largest town and a handy base for driving around the island.
