Jakarta

Jakarta is Indonesia’s capital and largest city, home to more than eleven million people, and most international trips begin at its airport. At first glance it can feel like a crowded business hub, yet it holds layers of history that reward a day or two. At its heart the National Monument (Monas) rises 132 meters, topped by a gold-clad flame, with a viewing platform that looks out over the whole city. To the north lies Kota Tua, the old town—once the center of Batavia in the seventeenth century—around Fatahillah Square and museums in historic buildings, among them the Jakarta History Museum and the Wayang Museum. If you want quieter water, the Thousand Islands stretch north of the city in the Java Sea; some form a marine reserve with small sandy beaches reachable by boat on a day trip. Jakarta is also a food city: from street stalls to modern restaurants, you will find dishes from every island in the country.
