Komodo National Park

This park is the last stronghold of the Komodo dragon, the world’s largest lizard, which can grow up to three meters long. Founded in 1980 to protect it, the park covers 1,733 square kilometers of islands and sea, and joined the World Heritage List in 1991. Its gateway is the town of Labuan Bajo on the western tip of Flores, with a small airport three kilometers away; boats leave from here for day trips or multi-day cruises. On Rinca Island, rangers lead short and medium walks to see dragons in their habitat. Padar Island is best known for the view from its hilltop over several bays with differently colored beaches, including a pink-sand shore. Between the islands, clear water invites swimming and snorkeling. The best way to experience the park is a two-day boat trip with nights on the deck. Never approach the dragons alone—they are dangerous wild animals—and always follow the rangers’ instructions.
