Kampong Glam

Kampong Glam is the historic Malay quarter around Arab Street and Sultan Mosque. The mosque shows a grey-and-gold dome and a broad façade. Arab Street holds fabric and perfume shops in narrow shophouses. The Malay Heritage Centre at Istana Kampong Glam presents community history on the site. The district sits close to its two neighbours; you can compare three urban fabrics in one day if you walk between them. Aerial views show lower density than Marina Bay, a breath after the towers. One to two hours on foot, then MRT to Marina or the Botanic Gardens. The quarter recalls that Singapore was a coastal settlement before it became a global harbour. Side-street angles on the mosque dome pick up decorative detail without needing to enter. Boutiques and cafés fill many ground floors, yet heritage façades remain the reason to come. Mid-morning light softens colours on Arab Street; evenings bring a different rhythm of shoppers. Keep the visit focused on streets and public heritage spaces, and leave time to sit and watch the quarter rather than racing past every shopfront.
