Spice farms on Unguja

Zanzibar’s name has long been tied to Indian Ocean spice trade; today farm visits on Unguja are short sensory walks: crushed leaves, husks, fruit, layered scents and local explanation of what the island grows. Half a day fits most visitors, and it can sit in the morning before an afternoon in Stone Town when the schedule between beach and airport is tight. If you buy, buy at the farm itself or at the market. Keep it a light stop between stone and sand, not a substitute for a full Stone Town day. The stop links the nose to what you later see in Stone Town lanes: spices on offer, a seafront, and an island rhythm still inside the country. Wear comfortable shoes; paths between plants can turn muddy after rain.
