Pemba, a quieter archipelago rhythm

Pemba is the large northern island of the Zanzibar Archipelago inside Tanzania, about 988 km² with 543,441 residents in the 2022 census and a highest elevation listed at 119 m. Compared with busier Unguja, Pemba is told through clearer water in places, dense mangroves around Chake Chake, Wete harbour and nearby Misali Island’s low shore and clear sea. Access usually runs via Unguja or by scheduled air and boat links; do not assume a fast urban tunnel. Two to three days cover harbour, mangroves and a beach; four if you want forests such as Ngezi at a slow pace. Do not call Pemba “Stone Town”: Zanzibar City and Stone Town sit on Unguja; Pemba is another island in the same archipelago. Place it after Unguja if you want a less crowded extension, or leave it for a second trip—honesty beats forcing both islands into a very short holiday.
