Nyerere, a park carved from northern Selous

Nyerere National Park was created in 2019 from the northern part of what was known as Selous Game Reserve, and it is Tanzania’s largest national park at 30,893 km². Historic Selous was larger, at about 54,600 km², and remains among the country’s UNESCO World Heritage properties. The scene here is rivers—especially the Rufiji—bush and savannah less crowded than the famous northern circuit. Access often ties to Morogoro or light flights to reserve airstrips; river camps are common in regional descriptions. Three to four days give a sense of river scale; do not add Nyerere as “one day from Dar es Salaam” without counting distance. Choose it for quieter south after or instead of repeating Serengeti, while recognising that tourist infrastructure differs from the better-equipped north.
