Chinatown

Chinatown in Outram is a weave of colourful shophouse rows and markets. Pagoda Street is among the older thoroughfares; its name recalls temples and small shops. Shophouses with a shaded five-foot way give passers-by cover from midday heat. The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple shows a red façade and carved wood detail. An evening here often means dinner at a nearby hawker centre, then a walk along Pagoda Street. An MRT station sits close by, and weekends grow crowded. Distances to Little India and Kampong Glam are short, yet do not blur the three into one rushed hour: each district has its own pace, prices and smells. The quarter reminds you that Singapore was a harbour that gathered migrants long before it became a glass skyline. Low-angle photographs pick out ornate shophouse fronts under overhead wires.
