A large western atoll

Ari, a rectangle of islands in the west

Ari Atoll is among the Maldives’ largest natural atolls, west in the archipelago. The islands spread in a near-rectangle about 89 by 30 kilometres, with 105 islands across the northern and southern administrative sections together. The atoll sits in tourism-development zones, and access from the Malé area is often cited as roughly half an hour by seaplane. Here overwater villas and wooden walkways appear above turquoise lagoons, and islands such as Thudufushi and Bathala offer sandy beaches and palms. From the air Ari reads as a reef ring or arc separating ocean from lagoon; that visual lesson matters more than any activity list. Do not confuse Ari with Baa: Baa is mid-northwest and a biosphere reserve, while Ari is a large western stretch dense with resorts. Four days on one island inside Ari give the rhythm of tide and inner reefs without rushing. If you move between islands, count the seaplane or boat as part of the day, not a margin.
