Zanzibar stone: fort, House of Wonders, Swahili waterfront

Stone Town is layered Swahili fabric on Unguja’s west coast: narrow lanes, coral and lime façades, carved doors and public buildings along the harbour. The Old Fort is a low, massive defensive block visible from the sea before the alleys; the House of Wonders presents a multi-storey arcaded face as a major urban landmark; surrounding buildings such as the Sultan’s Palace complete the skyline from the water. UNESCO inscribed the site in 2000 under cultural criteria, with a 96 ha core and buffer zone. Read the architecture through its materials, its height, and its historic role in harbour and trade. One to two hours on the waterfront and nearby lanes give a first reading; half a day if courtyards or exhibitions are open to visitors. Pair this walk with beach or spice the same day so Unguja reads complete: stone then sand, not one without the other.
