Mountain trails
The Hajar Mountains are Oman at its best for anyone who likes to walk. On Jebel Shams, a marked trail climbs to the South Summit at 2,997 metres, since the higher North Summit is a restricted area. From the rim you look straight down into the rock walls of Wadi Nakhur. Summer up here stays around 20°C, while winter drops below freezing, and snow covers the heights once every few years. From the village of Misfat al Abriyeen, a trail follows an old donkey path and links up with routes to other mountain villages. Misfat itself joined the World Tourism Organization's list of Best Tourism Villages in 2021, with houses of mud, stone and sarooj and terraces of mangoes, pomegranates, figs and olives. On the Saiq Plateau of the Jebel Akhdar, terraced orchards stretch out and supply the local rose water. Start walking at dawn, carry more water than you think you need, and do not hike the long trails alone.
