The High Atlas and Toubkal

The Atlas range stretches about 2,500 kilometres, and its highest summit, Toubkal, stands 4,167 metres tall, the highest mountain in North Africa and the Arab world. It lies 63 kilometres south of Marrakesh and is visible from the city on clear days. The usual route to the top starts in the village of Imlil and normally takes two days, with a night in a mountain refuge. It is non-technical, so no climbing gear is needed, but it does demand good fitness because of the altitude. The mountain is in Toubkal National Park, created in 1942 over 380 square kilometres, with flowers in spring and colourful forests in autumn. Most people in the Atlas are Amazigh, and their villages cling to the slopes between valleys. If the summit is not your goal, Imlil itself, an Amazigh village among the peaks, and the park's ecomuseum make a fine day out. Snow is heavy on the heights in winter and can last until May, so choose your dates by season and hire a local guide.
