The Atlantic coast

Morocco's Atlantic coast runs south from Tangier, and ocean currents keep it much milder than the interior. On the southern stretch near Agadir there are more than 300 sunny days a year. Nineteen kilometres north of Agadir is Taghazout, an Amazigh fishing village that has become one of the country's best-known surf spots since foreigners began riding the waves of its bay in the 1960s. Its most famous break, Anchor Point, lies 3 kilometres north of the village; the waves work best from September to April, and the water warms up to 21°C. Winter is generally the main surf season in Morocco. The hills around are home to the argan tree, which grows only in this region, and the know-how of its oil joined UNESCO's intangible heritage list in 2014. Further north, strong trade winds blow over Essaouira and drive currents that make its sea rich in sardines. Save a few coastal days for the end of your trip, after the heat of the interior.
