Beneath the Red Sea
Egypt's Red Sea is one of the world's best-known diving destinations, and the beauty of it is that the coral starts right at the shoreline. At Ras Muhammad, a marine reserve since 1983, reefs hug the coast with more than 220 kinds of coral, sea turtles and angelfish striped in blue and yellow. Dahab, on the Gulf of Aqaba, is known as South Sinai's diving capital, with sites for beginners and experts alike, including the Blue Hole, over 100 m deep, which draws freedivers because the depth begins right off the shore and there is no current. It is also one of the most dangerous dive sites on earth, so never go beyond your training. From Hurghada, day boats head out to the reefs around the Giftun Islands. You do not need a diving licence to see much of this: a mask and snorkel are enough in shallow water. Coral is a fragile living thing, so never stand on it or touch it, and choose a licensed dive centre.
