The Atlantic coast

Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata — officially San Felipe de Puerto Plata — is a major coastal city on the north shore, capital of its province, and both a commercial and tourist hub. It was among the island’s early colonial ports and today greets visitors with resorts such as Playa Dorada and Costa Dorada east of the centre, with tens of thousands of hotel beds in the area. Inside the city limits, Pico Isabel de Torres rises to 793 metres, and the Caribbean’s first aerial cable car carries visitors to the summit above the sea, colourful houses and valleys. The centre keeps wooden and painted buildings on streets near the harbour, and the waterfront suits an evening stroll. Gregorio Luperón International Airport, code POP, serves the region with seasonal and year-round flights. Give one day to the centre, the cable car and small museums, and another to beaches east of town if you stay in a coastal resort; leave time to return before evening traffic on the coast road.
