The central mountains
Jarabacoa and Pico Duarte
Jarabacoa is a town in the central region of La Vega Province, in a cooler mountain valley of short rivers and waterfalls. The valley name is tied to water in local memory, and the town is a gateway to many Cordillera Central trails toward Pico Duarte — the highest summit in the Dominican Republic, on Hispaniola and in the Caribbean, at 3,101 metres by a 2021 measurement. The easiest route starts in La Ciénaga near Jarabacoa: about 23.1 kilometres to the summit with roughly 1,977 metres of elevation gain, and a shelter at La Compartición about five kilometres from the top. Forests around the peak are Hispaniolan pine, and winter nights can drop below freezing — a contrast to the hot Caribbean image. Near Jarabacoa, Salto Jimenoa falls between rock and moss, a rewarding half-day stop if you skip the summit. Arrange guide, mules and overnight lodging in advance for the peak, and pack warm layers and enough water even if the coast felt hot before the climb.
