The mountains
Summits and waterfall trails
The Cordillera Central is the island’s tallest and broadest mountain range, topped by Pico Duarte at 3,101 metres above sea level. The La Ciénaga trail is the best-known route for hikers starting near Jarabacoa: 23.1 kilometres to the summit with a large elevation gain, and a common overnight stop at La Compartición shelter before the final day. Mules can be hired to carry water, food and sleeping bags if you arrange that with a licensed local guide at the trailhead. Weather at altitude is alpine and cold at night; water can freeze on winter nights, so fleece and a hat matter even when eastern beaches are hot in summer. If you skip the summit, Jarabacoa offers waterfalls such as Salto Jimenoa in half a day, and shorter walks among rivers and mountain farms. Collect park permits at the trailhead office, treat spring water before drinking, and stay on the path in the pine forests where fog can erase landmarks quickly.
