Before the cities

The cone comes first

This is Fuji, Japan’s highest mountain at 3,776 meters. The journey does not begin only on a capital street. It begins with a snowy cone visible from lakes and trains, then descends into Tokyo, climbs into wooden temple precincts, and leaps to islands north or south. The summit is an active stratovolcano; the last recorded eruption ran from 1707 to 1708.
