Ishigaki: south of the south

Okinawa is not one beach beside the airport. The prefecture spans island groups, and Ishigaki in the Sakishima group offers a dense marine scene: Kabira Bay with turquoise water, and clear sandy beaches. Kabira lies inside Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park and is known for its scenic beauty. Getting there usually means a flight to Naha, then a domestic hop or a sea crossing depending on the island. This rhythm differs from a shinkansen day between Tokyo and Osaka; here time goes into waiting on the water and moving between islands. If the program is tight, choose one bay and a full unhurried day. The south completes Japan’s identity: not all of it is a snowy cone or a neon street. Marine weather shifts quickly; leave margin on the last day before the plane. Kabira suits looking and quiet more than a race of activities. If this is your first south, start with Ishigaki or a beach near Naha before ranging to farther islands.
