Fuji and Hakone: mountain and lake

Fuji is Japan’s highest peak at 3,776.24 meters on Honshu. The mountain was inscribed as a cultural World Heritage site on 22 June 2013. Hakone is a town in Kanagawa Prefecture with 10,965 residents on 1 October 2023 and an area of about 92.82 square kilometers. Hakone is a hot-spring town facing Fuji. Lake Ashi is a crater lake on the southwestern wall of the complex Hakone volcano; the last local eruption noted is 1170 at Owakudani. The lake is known for Fuji views, boats, and hot springs. A day trip from Tokyo is possible by train; two days are gentler if you want dawn on the lake and sunset on the cone. Distance here is not only kilometers; it is whether the summit appears or vanishes behind mist. Check visibility forecasts before climbing to the lake — fog is common. Hot springs and an overnight in town give you a second morning if the mountain hides on day one. The distance from Tokyo is short compared with Hokkaido or Okinawa.
